Society Hill has many townhomes, some dating back to the eighteenth century. Over the years, condominium developments have been built in Society Hill, including Abbott’s Square. Abbott’s Square is a midrise condo building built in the 1970s on the site of a former dairy plant on Headhouse Square and South Street. The fourth floor of Abbott’s Square was used for parking only, but now it has been renovated into 47 rental apartment units by EBRM Corporation. The new rental apartment community is being called Headhouse Flats.
Headhouse Flats extends all along the fourth floor of Abbott’s Square, which creates views of lively South Street and elegant Headhouse Square, which is soon to be renovated. Several stores, on the first floor along South Street to the corner, have closed and the large combined space is being renovated and filled with a large new supermarket called BFresh. Headhouse Flats will have a separate entrance from the lobby of Abbott’s Square Condominiums. There will, also, be a separate fitness center for the residents of Headhouse Flats. In each unit will be GE stainless steel appliances, LG washer/dryer single units, and solid granite countertops. There are studios, one bedroom, and two bedroom units. The studios start at $1,225 per month, the one bedroom units start at 1,550 per month, and the two bedrooms start at $2,795 per month.
Headhouse Flats adds another type of housing option to a long-established neighborhood, which is mostly condos and townhomes. It provides this housing along one of Philadelphia’s most exciting and colorful streets and within walking distance of public transportation and many Center City office buildings and hospitals. Headhouse Flats will add new housing options in a historic and active area of Philadelphia.
