Jealous of all those homeowners passing out Halloween candy to cute kids and not-nearly-as-cute pre-teens? Just because you’re an apartment dweller doesn’t mean you can’t make your rental a stop on the trick-or-treat route.
Here are 5 steps to help you make your apartment trick-or-treat friendly this Halloween:
1. Lighten up. The universal sign for “no candy” is a dark house. To let trick-or-treaters and their parents know you’ve got Snickers to share, make sure the lights outside your apartment building’s entryway stay on.
2. Decorate. If your landlord doesn’t decorate, ask him or her if it would be okay for you to add some of your own flair to the building. Just be sure to stick with jack-o-lanterns and other temporary decorations that won’t cause any damage to the building facade.
3. Hang out. The best way to show trick-or-treaters your place is open for business is by waving hello from your stoop. BYO pumpkin, a camp chair and a friend or two and set up shop out front to welcome kids and parents to stop by.
4. Get creative. Live on the third floor? Use chalk to circle a spot for trick-or-treaters to stand and look up. Keep an eye out and when you get a group, lower a basket of candy on a string.
5. Get the good candy. If you’re worried kids won’t know to stop by, the best publicity is full-size Butterfingers. Get the good candy and you’ll get more cute ninjas and princesses than you can feed.
Happy Halloween!
